I have run into a lot of situations through my work experience where my supervisor will not support me and my decisions, or support me as an individual who is trying to grow their career. This irritates me as an employee and makes me feel on the lower end of the totem pole.  With bosses like this, hostile work environments are created and lead to employees that do not perform to their best.

Let me throw you an example… examples always tie my nonsense together.

In a situation at work once, where I was spoken to in a disrespectful manner by a customer, I tested my supervisor to see if she was a leader or a boss. Now normally I wouldn’t care if someone talks to me in a disrespectful tone, but when the reason the person is so minute and so unimportant, it just bothers me. People like that need to be slapped. In the face. Hard. There are things going on around this world and in people’s lives that are worth getting upset about and she just looked like a clown screaming about the littlest thing. I also believe that there is no valid reason for anyone to get upset with the middle man. I see it happen all the time. Do not yell at the poor customer service person on the phone when your order is messed up. They didn’t mess your order up, some lousy underpaid, overworked guy did who you will never know or ever meet did. But people can not comprehend that. They cannot think past the point of their order being messed up and they take things out on the first person in the line of fire. It sucks and it is not fair.

But here is where I think the playing fields can be leveled out. And it starts with the supervisor. Now after telling my boss that this person was being rude and disrespectful to me, talking to me as if I just learned English, I explained to her the situation. I explained how I felt and how I feel that she needed to speak to this customer and tell her that she can not and will not talk to me like that again  (SIDENOTE: This customer has been disrespectful to me more than once). It is called putting your foot down and not too many people can do it anymore. Why? Mainly, because they are scared of the repercussions… and I get that, but there are also repercussions for choosing not to say anything in my defense as well.

And she didn’t. She called the customer, told her that her issue would be resolved right away, and apologized for the inconvenience. Never saying anything about the way the customer spoke to me or how the customer made me feel. Now I know the old saying, the customer is always right, but I think there is a fine line between that. This customer was making a mountain out of a mole hill and taking whatever else was going on in her life out on me. And the one person I turn to for support, shoots me down even further than where the customer sent me in the beginning of this whole situation. After not sticking up for me and my fulfilling my request to say something, I now have lost respect for her as my boss and disclaimed her from ever getting the title of a leader. I have also lost any hope of turning to her for help and realized that there comes a point where I will put my foot down and I will tell this customer next time it happens, that is to no longer happen again to me.

It is one thing to be a boss, but to be a leader, well that’s going above and beyond your duties. Leaders are looked upon as heroes or gladiators as Olivia Pope would call them, and bosses are people that never make the headlines or break the mold they were transformed into. The way I look at it, you have two options in life, you can either be a leader or a boss. You can create, inspire and lead your followers to greatness or you can boss them into pretending to like you and respect you as an individual. As they always say, it’s the choices in life that define you as a person xo
